Studies on the Regeneration of Synovial Membrane in the Rabbit Knee

Abstract
To investigate the regenerative process of synovial membrane, histochemical and enzymee histochemical studies were carried out on the regenerative synovium following surgical synovectomy in rabbit knee joints.
The results obtained were as follows.
1. Regeneration of synovial membrane was initially observed on 20th -day after synovectomy and the process continued to the end of this experiment(70th day).
2. In the early stage of regenerative process, exposed. subsynovium was faintly positive with alcian blue staining, suggesting the existence of acid mucopolysaccharides. With the progress of regenerative process, PAS-positive materials became increased and replacement of subsynovium by maturing collagenous tissue was noted with special connective tissue stainings.
3. Activities of acid and alkaline phosphatases were markedly increased in .the early stage and restored to normal on 40th day after synovectomy. Activity of adenosine triphosphatase, however, slightly increased in the early stage of regeneration and became markedly increased by 40th day, but the activity was not normalized until the end ¢¥of the experiment.
4. The articular cartilage of the femoral condyle revealed- limited changes throughout the experimental period except for the early increase of activities. of acid and alkaline phosphatases.
